welcome to cosmoscards.com. we are
a small business started in august, 2006 by myself, andy walter, my wife kristy and her sister jessica violette. we've taken
the large oil and acrylic paintings i've created over the past ten years and had them reproduced digitally onto 5 x 7 inch
seventy pound paper notecards and professionally scored. the images are representative of my travels over the course of my
33 years (born in cairo, childhood in rockland, maine, five trips across the country in my teens and twenties, and back to
maine for good in 1998) and the work i've found (just about every type of labor but most notably nine seasons of lobster fishing
and two winters at the portland fish exchange). the artists i most admire are paul klee (for his imagination), wassily kandinsky
(for his liberal use of color), piet mondrian (for his compositional sensibility), and leonardo da vinci (for his extraordinary
genius). i stretch my canvases on plywood, apply two coats of gesso with subsequent sandings, then lay down a pencil drawing.
then comes the fun part, mixing pigments and walnut oil and playing with the balance of colors within the structure of the
line and composition. we got the idea for the business in april when kristy sent copies of the image to the left glued to
construction paper to friends and family as a birth announcement for our son evan. my mom replied with a thankyou note saying
that it was one of the nicest cards she had seen. a few weeks later we purchased a digital camera, started talking to printers,
and involved jessica with the marketing and computer aspects of the business. i hope you enjoy viewing and sending these
cards as much as we've enjoyed the process of getting them to you. p. s. cosmos is our 18 pound friendly tiger cat.
